Minerals and metal-bearing rocks were subjected to intense heat, calcination, dissolution, crystallization, and distillation in an effort to separate their components and reveal their hidden qualities. These processes were believed to purify matter, breaking it down into its most basic forms before recombining it into something more perfect. Sulfur, mercury, salts, and mineral ores played important roles in these transformations, serving as the raw materials for experimentation. The observation of how rocks and minerals changed under different conditions helped shape alchemical theories of transformation, purification, and the interconnected nature of all matter.
