This is from an extinct type of cretaceous period tree. The trees had been living in a tropical swamp 80 million years ago and had been rotting when the Wetumpka meteorite hit and they were covered over and began to petrified so there were holes and cavities from water and termite damage which allowed the smoky quartz crystals to grow in them.
